The Airship by Angel Bomb Press

$150.00

As a book artist, one goal of Todd's work has been to engage the reader in an ergodic experience; that is, encourage the reader to do more than simply read and instead, engage and interact with the book before them. Exploration of the written word and of the book format is something that fascinates him and he seeks to push this development further. Todd’s vision is one to create unusual books that extend beyond the written page into other areas of exploration. With The Airship, he explores the crossover between the written page and digital experiences to further a reader’s involvement and understanding of the story. Technology itself is crucial to the story and therefore he uses technology to reiterate that to the reader and immerse them in it.

The Airship is a science fiction story exploring multiverse theory. It centers upon characters living under an oppressive and militant regime trying to escape using a new technology. It is the first in a planned trilogy and includes digital elements that mirror parts of the story, taking readers to more exploratory content like videos from the regime and blueprints of the airship. This interaction with the digital realm arose from the anachronistic way in which he produces work, first developing the book on a computer (future tech) and then printing on vintage analog presses (outdated tech).”

Todd Thyberg (he/him) runs Angel Bomb, a letterpress and book arts studio where he is fulfilling a lifelong dream to create books. In his work he strives to engage the reader in an ergodic experience; that is, to encourage the reader to do more than simply read and instead engage and interact with the book before them. He does this by using various methods of engagement, from producing QR codes within a letterpress-printed graphic novel that takes readers to interactive online elements that deepen the story, to the process of aging and weathering papers which gives the reader the sense of delving through history. His work varies from activist pamphlets to science fiction and includes his own writing and illustrations.
